There are two types of reflective material used in hi vis clothing:
Fluorescent material takes invisible ultraviolet light from the sun and reflects it as more visible light to the viewer. The fluorescent material will appear brighter than non-fluorescent colours, but requires a natural source of light to reflect.
Retroreflective material directly reflects a source of light to the viewer. Retroreflective material is perfect for those who will work near traffic as it will reflect the vehicle’s headlight beam to the driver, making the wearer visible. However, during daytime retroreflective material is not visibly enhanced due to the lack of contrast.
Those who work in emergency services must wear hi vis workwear whilst working. This allows them to be easily identifiable at the scene of an accident. It also increases visibility at the scene, reducing the risk of further incidents from occurring. Not only does it help protect the victim of the incident, it also helps to protect the emergency service professional who has put their own safety in danger to help.
